The word is
Timbre
(pronounced "TAM-ber")
This is the tone color of a sound.  Instruments made of metal often have a BRIGHT timbre while instruments made of wood often have a deeper, warmer timbre.  Some people have a scratchy timbre to their voice, while other have a gentle, soft, velvety timbre to their voices.  The timbre of a sound is one of the things that helps us tell one sound from another.
