The following checklist is based on the state curriculum for 2nd Grade.  I have taken the broadly stated curriculum and created this detailed checklist.  List of styles, cultures, and countries are a list of the possibilities from our Silver Burdett textbook.  Please feel free to offer input on my curriculum checklist project.  Words in blue are basic music vocabulary I have assigned to 2nd grade.  Words in black bold and purple bold are carried over from Kindergarten and 1st grade.  For a complete list of all vocabulary assigned to each grade level, click here

Sounds and timbre:

1. I know the names of classroom instruments by sight and sound.

2. I know the families of instruments and how they make sound.

4. I can read rhythm in 3/4 meter. 

5. I can read a simply melody using solfege: Mi, Sol, La, Do, and Re.

6. I can read a simple melody using letter names for notes.

7. I know music words and know the names of symbols:

          a. soft, loud

          b. fast, slow

          c. smooth, jumpy

          d. repeat signs

          e. coda

          f. time signatures 2/4  , 3/4

          g. whole, half, quarter, eighth notes, and quarter rests

 

Listening:

1. I can tell when phrases are the same and different.

2. I can tell when a phrase begins and ends.

3. I can tell when I hear AB form in music by moving and with words.

4. I know the difference between a verse and a refrain.

5. I can tell when I hear ABA form in music by moving and with words.

6. I can tell when I hear an introduction in music by moving and with words.

7. I know what a coda is when I hear it.

8. I can tell when music is fast and slow.
