The following checklist is based on the state curriculum for 3rd Grade.  I have taken the broadly stated curriculum and created this detailed checklist.  List of styles, cultures, and countries are a list of the possibilities from our Silver Burdett textbook.  Please feel free to offer input on my curriculum checklist project.  Words in red are basic music vocabulary I have assigned to 3rd grade.  Words in other colors are carried over from previous grade levels.  For a complete list of all vocabulary assigned to each grade level, click here

Sounds and timbre:

1. I know the families of instruments and how they make sound.

Reading Music:

2. I can name the parts of the notes:  notehead, stem, and beam.

2. I can read rhythm in 2/4 meter.

3. I can read rhythm in 3/4 meter. 

4. I can read rhythm in 4/4 meter.

5. I can name the notes on the treble clef.

6. I can read a simply melody on the staff.

7. I know music words, the names of symbols, and how to use them:

          a. soft-mp, p, pp, loud-mf, f, ff

          b. mezzo piano, pianissimo, mezzo forte, fortissimo

          c. tempo words: moderato, allegro, adagio

          d. legato, staccato

          e. repeat signs

          g. time signatures 2/4, 3/4

Listening:

4. I can tell when I hear an introduction in music by moving and with words.

6. I can identify call and response form when I hear it.

7. I can show what I know about music by conducting it.

8. I can show what I know about music by dancing to it.

9. I can tell the tempo of music.
